Giving care towards a patient is hard work. Whether you are a trained professional, or a family member, providing care is one of the most taxing responsibilities. Trained carers and professionals that provide these services even avail respite care services to temporarily relieve themselves of these duties.

As everyone knows, not even professional carers work around the clock 24/7. Respite care is a service that provides temporary relief for a caregiver that is currently taking care of a patient. This will enable the current caregiver, be it family or a hired carer to get a much needed break.

Finding relief in others.

With Respite care, you can ask Friends or family or even loved ones to watch over your patient, so that you can take a break and do the things you would like. Though, this isn't the only option, as you may also find volunteers and even paid carers to render those services every now and then.

It is also possible to acquire respite care through outside programs such as Adult Day Care centers, day camps and nursing homes.

As a carer whether family or professional, you might find yourself looking for relief. Here are some options that you could avail.

  • Friends and Family - Mostly applicable for family members who are taking care of their own. You can seek respite care through your friends and family, asking them to take care of the patient in your place.

  • Individual Care Professionals - If you know an individual care professional, it is very possible to ask them to provide respite care. With their professional experience, you will be able to take your mind off and enjoy your day.

  • Dedicated Facilities -  There are specific facilities that you can also turn to when you want to find relief care. These facilities specialize in providing care whether it be temporary or permanent. These can be adult day centers, or even nursing care or assisted living facilities.

  • Domiciliary Care Services - There are companies that also specialize in services that will allow you to avail respite care services. The carers in these services are carefully chosen and curated according to the patient’s needs. You can trust that the company will send someone that knows how to handle their patient.

Should you take a break every now and then?

Absolutely. Carers either professional or motivated through family connection, are not machines. Taking care of someone in need is a very arduous task. And getting burnt out is certainly one of the factors that can affect a carer’s health and motivation.

Bottom Line

As a carer, taking care of yourself is part of how you will also help take care of a patient. Caregiving is an arduous and laborious task. You can find respite care almost everywhere, from friends and family, to professionals, facilities and even companies to help you out. Take a breather and allow yourself to enjoy every now and then.
